Abstract

A comparative study of the use of culture and polymerase chainreaction (PCR) to detect asymptomatic carriers of Mycoplasma mycoidescluster from ear swabs was carried out. During a 1 year-period, a total of 283ear swabs were collected from Murciano-Granadina goats. 261 samples werecollected from 3 herds previously diagnosed as infected by Mycoplasma spp.and 22 ear swabs were collected in a free-contagious agalactia (CA) herd andused as negative control. PCR was positive in 235 samples for M. mycoidescluster. MmmLC was identified in all positive samples. A total of 113 sampleswere positive by culture, and all those culture-positive samples, except 2 ofthem, were PCR positive too. Results obtained confirmed the high sensibility ofPCR respect to culture to realise the direct detection of ear carriers ofMycoplasma spp. These results also confirm the high number of auricularcarriers existing in CA infected herd.
