Resum
Currently (January 2018), the only two organizations promoting issues related to the conservation, use and management of geodiversity and its geological heritage in the Spanish Committee of the Internation Union for the Conservation of Nature (CeIUCN) are the Geological Society of Spain (SGE, since 2008) and the Spanish Society for the Defense of Geological and Mining Heritage (SEDPGYM, since 2015). The importance of belonging to CeIUCN is that it is the most important environmental network in Spain, with 39 member organizations, including 13 foundations, 16 associations and 10 public administrations (www.uicn.es). In these two years as a member of CeUICN (2016-2017), SEDPGYM has participated in all its forums and publications. This paper summarizes this participation, which has resulted in a greater awareness amongst its members relating geodiversity and geoheritage as a part of nature to be preserved. We also describe a document which explicitly mentions the conservation of geological and mining heritage, known as the Seville Charter, and which emerged from the XII International Forum on Nature Conservation, held in Seville in May 2016. This document is a useful new tool to promote and support initiatives for the protection, use and management of these two types of heritage.
