Abstract

The family context is certainly the most important for the proper psychosocial development of children. In this research we focus on parenting style discrepancy, which refers to the existence of different educational styles in both parents, as well as interparental disagreements and conflicts, due to the possible influence of such discrepancies in the appearance of problems in the social development of children. Thus, the overall objective of this study is to examine the association between parenting style discrepancy, family dissatisfaction and social maladjustment in preadolescence. The sample consisted of 404 children aged between 8 and 12 years, that were administered the self-reported Multifactor Adaptation Test (TAMAI; Hernández, 2004), which scores on these three aspects selected. Bivariate correlations in the statistical analyses were carried out. The results showed, first, a significant and direct association between parenting style discrepancy and social mismatch in children. On the other hand, this educational gap between parents also showed a strong positive relation to family dissatisfaction. The data are discussed according to the available scientific literature today.
