Resumen

Quality literature and popular fiction are commonly placed in confronting spheres within the publishing market. According to literary criticism, high prestige literature and bestsellers tend to constitute selfcontained categories that rarely overlap. Using a textual corpus of two contemporary Spanish novels which objectively represent both tendencies Eduardo Lagos Llámame Brooklyn and La sombra del viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, the aim of this presentation is to undertake a quantitative analysis of both books at a lexical level. By means of this analysis, we will determine the lexical density, key words, specific and thematic lexical frequency, and the lexico-stylistic preferences that permeate each novel. These aspects will be used to assess some of the existing similarities and divergences within the vocabulary used in two outstanding publishing products which, in principle, belong to different literary canons.
