Abstract

STUDY OF THE SEXUAL SATISFACTION OF WOMEN IN THE PUERPERIUM ABSTRACT The content of this thesis is related to issues of sexual life of women in the postpartum period, and in particular experienced sexual function and sexual satisfaction in their relationship. The overall objective of this work aims to study the sexual satisfaction of women during the stage of puerperium in the Health Area II of Cartagena (Murcia), and the specific objectives are: 1) Assess how you perceive puerperal women his function and sexual life in their relationship; 2) To review the psychometric quality of the existing measurement scales of sexual satisfaction in the postpartum woman; 3) Validate a scale to a Spanish sample of women to measure sexual satisfaction in the puerperium. It develops a mixed methodology to respond to the objectives, betting on a qualitative strategy (semi-structured interviews), and quantitative (systematic review of scales of sexual satisfaction in women, and the validation of a scale of sexual satisfaction to the puerperal period). Also the interest of this thesis lies in its practical usefulness, by contributing considerations that can be useful for the improvement of the sexual and affective attention of the postpartum woman by the health professionals and in particular by the obstetric-gynecological nurses (Midwives), contributing to the knowledge about sexuality in the puerperium. The investigation begins with an exploratory study, carried out within the phenomenological qualitative parameters, it allows closer to reality listening to the voices of the participants. Continues to systematically review the scales of sexual satisfaction of women in the puerperium, measure and select the best psychometric properties present, and finish with the application and validation of the scale of sexual satisfaction selected in a sample of postpartum women of the Area II of Health in Cartagena (Murcia). After reviewing the psychometric quality of the existing measurement of sexual satisfaction, the review does not find specific instruments of sexual satisfaction in the puerperium, and notes that the psychometric quality criteria selected by each author to validate their scales are very variable. The results of this study allow us to conclude that women in this period suffer from sexual dysfunctions related to decreased desire and sexual arousal, orgasmic disorders and genito-pelvic pain during penetration, which, in addition to impairing their self-esteem, interfere with their sexual relationship lives, causing them discomfort. Qualifying the Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS) (Hudson et al., 1981) and The New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (NSSS) (Stulhofer, Busko & Brouillard, 2010), as the most complete scales, including the highest number of positive psychometric properties calculated. Finally, after verifying their reliability and validity, the results show the usefulness of the ISS (Hudson et al., 1981) as a validated instrument for the evaluation of the sexual satisfaction of women in the puerperium.
