ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: The relationship between cancer and venous thromboembolism (VTE)is well-established due to the involvement of hemostatic system on tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. To investigate the in vitro effect of low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs), particularly, sodium enoxaparin, and cisplatinin oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OSCC cell line H357 was treated independently or simultaneously with sodium enoxaparin at 0,1, 0,5, 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 g/ml and/orcisplatin at 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10 Mconcentrationsafter 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation. The combination effects of sodium enoxaparin and cisplatin were evaluated by measuring cell viability, apoptosis as well as migration ability. RESULTS: Anti-cancer drug-cisplatin and sodium enoxaparin reduced OSCC cell viability. The most significant inhibitory effect was observed at 8 and 10 Mcisplatinconcentrations in combinationwith 100 g/ml sodiumenoxaparin. Likewise, 8 and 10 Mcisplatin and sodium enoxaparin doses significantly increasedapoptosis after 48 hours of incubation (p=0,008; p=0,009 respectively). Migratory ability was also inhibited by this concomitant treatment after 18 and 24 hours. CONCLUSIONS: Sodium enoxaparin,in combination with cisplatin, increases apoptosis and reduce cell viability and tumour-migration ability.
