Résumé

ABSTRACT AIMS: The concept of obsessive-compulsive spectrum starts from a dimensional design of compulsiveness / impulsivity. At one extreme there are disorders related to the overestimation of harm and risk avoidance such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). At the other extreme are found those characterized by risk seeking and underestimation of harm such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The main objective of this research was to analyze the differences in emotional intelligence (EI) and Anger in patients with OCD and BPD. The specific objectives pursued on both constructs were as follows: (1) To determine the average scores of IE and Anger in each of the three groups, clinical (OCD and BPD) and non-clinical, analyzing whether there are differences among them. (2) To study the disparity between these two clinical groups regarding sociodemographic and clinical variables. (3) To analyze whether differences in IE and Anger between the two clinical groups may be influenced by the mood of the participants and / or their level of anxiety. METHODOLOGY: A causal comparative cross-sectional design among three groups (OCD, BPD and Control Group) was selected. The study population consisted of a sample of 92 participants, of whom 62 belonged to the clinical population and the rest to the non-clinical population. The clinical sample comprised 64.5% women while in the control group it was 53.3%. The average age of the clinical sample was 34.5 years (SD = 10.5), very similar to that of the non-clinical sample, whose mean age was 34.63 years (SD = 10.7). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Regarding EI, we obtained lower scores in BPD in Strategic Area, Changes and Emotional relations. As for Anger, we found higher scores in BPD in Anger, anger traits, external expression of anger and anger expression index. When the Depression and Anxiety variables were controlled, there ceased to be differences between the two clinical groups in IE. The only differences maintained were in in outward expression of Anger, with the highest score for the BPD group. Among subjects with OCD there was greater Anger in subjects with low introspection, a greater Anger trait in those showing consumption of toxic substances and self-harm. Among the group of participants with BPD we found more Anger in those with somatization, greater Anger Trait in those with associated somatic diseases and a family history of Serious Mental Disorder.
