Abstract

The characters that serve as a model for building a national identity, or represents, in one way or another, the Brazilian people were always motivating sources of study and research by literary historiography for decades. The character has attracted the interest of contemporary criticism, little explored so far, is the rogue, especially seen in the light of a phenomenon intrinsically rooted in local culture: the carnivalization. For a detailed analysis, this study is to present, as a timely example, the novel by Jorge Amado The Shepherds of the Night, 1964. In the tangle of voices that make up the narrative journey, we emphasize that iconic figure, drawn from a multifaceted reality, whose component Bahia strengthen even more the jeitinho Brazil Brazilian and friendly image of man.
