Abstract

This paper describes the psychometric properties of a new self-report to assess concern of children about surgical operations. The Questionnaire of Child Surgery Worries, Form A consists of 27 items and was administered to a random sample of 586 subjects, boys and girls, aged 7 to 10. Item screening reduced the number of items to 16, grouped in two factors, namely Worries about Medical Practice and Worries about Illness and its negative consequences, both explaining 19.65 percent of variance. The internal consistency index, was acceptable (a=77). Analysis of variance revealed that girls were much more worried about surgical operations than boys. No differences were found concerning age or exposure to surgery.
