Abstract

The aim of this descriptive research through survey is to prove the effects of age, gender and physical-sport practice in physical self-concept in students aged 9 up to 23 years old. The sample is made up of 2, 332 students who filled up a Physical Self-concept Questionary (PSQ). After different regressive, multivariant, univariant correlation analyses, the results reveal that both self-esteem in particular and physical self-concept in general are influenced by age, gender and physical-sport practice. Highlighting as the main result the fact that practising any sporting or physical activity predicts the self-esteem and physical self-concept. On the other hand, boys have a higher self-esteem, body-image, competence and physical condition. Concerning the evolution of self-esteem and physical self-concept from 9 up to 23 years old, relevant differences are only seen in the perceived competence and physical condition. To conclude, this work shows the relevance of age, gender and out-schools sports and physical activities practice, to elaborate the physical self-concept.
