Abstract

Introduction To analyze survival at 5 years from diagnosis of new diagnosed cases of cancer, period 1990-2010, in adults of Murcia Region. Methods Cancer cases from the Murcia Cancer Registry were included, classified in ICD-10 (solid tumors) and WHO (hematological). The observed, net and net survival adjusted by age at 5-years from diagnosis were calculated. The analysis were stratified by sex, tumor site, age group and period of time. Results 89713 cases were included, 50% males, with net survival between 6.2% (pancreas) and 94.3% (testis). High survival rates were observed in thyroid cancer, chronic lymphoid leukemia and skin melanoma; and low in pancreatic cancer and mesothelioma. Survival increased by 9.7% between periods and were 8.6% higher in women. Conclusions Survival is different according to the type of cancer, higher in women, in the recent period and in young adults. Survival monitoring contributes to cancer control.
