Resum

ABSTRACT The map information is known so far through the traditional fields that mark the cataloging internationally accepted standards, as ISBD, Marc21 and ISAD (G). There is a vast amount of information contained in nautical charting still not collected and, therefore, has not been described. Spain has a rich cartographic documentation that has accumulated through the centuries in different Spanish institutions. Most of this cartographic documentation is in files belonging to the military Archive System of the Ministry of Defense, particularly in the naval archives and institutions belonging to the Navy. This study aims to bring users and researchers of any discipline to all existing information on nautical charts of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries of Spanish production of Naval Archive of Cartagena, which so far has not picked centuries. For this purpose they have created new description fields that are complementary to existing traditional and appropriate international standards. The objectives posed in this study are generating new description fields, once collected all the information content of the charts and view the occurrences of that information in the data collection process, converting these fields description meta tags, explain each of the generated metatags and see their application within the existing cataloging systems. To carry out the objectives, first we proceeded to the description of 1482 nautical charts production of Spanish Naval Archive of Cartagena. Once described, an account of all the information that is repeated, ie see how many occurrences were able to create new fields for them to gather that information was made. Then the fields that were relevant to convert studied in metatags. The result was the creation of 23 metatags, as explained herein. The findings confirm that these metatags are of great importance to know the information of existing nautical charts, and can be fully complementary to existing standards.
