Exploratory study on video game addiction of college students in a pandemic scenario

Resumen

El consumo de videojuegos se ha incrementado de manera significativa en la última década. La población joven siempre ha tenido una mayor inclinación a consumirlos. Sin embargo, los riesgos de adicción a estos juegos están creciendo con el acceso a Internet y los nuevos dispositivos digitales, el menor coste de éstos y la falta de control parental. Por otra parte, una circunstancia extraña como la pandemia de COVID-19 implica confinamientos que duran semanas y que pueden influir en gran medida en un aumento del consumo. Este estudio pretende conocer la situación de los estudiantes universitarios en España con respecto al problema que se describe en este escenario de pandemia. Analiza el consumo de videojuegos y si se atisban riesgos de adicción, examinando qué factores resultan determinantes para este comportamiento. El método se basa en diversas técnicas estadísticas: el análisis descriptivo, la asociación entre variables, y la regresión logística para comprobar el fenómeno objeto de estudio, que son variables predictivas. Fruto de ello, se constató un alto nivel de consumo de videojuegos durante el confinamiento, hallándose patrones de adicción en un 16,6% de los casos. El uso excesivo de las redes sociales y la condición masculina mostraron una relevancia destacada. Estos resultados muestran igualmente la existencia de comorbilidad, lo que significa que los estudiantes universitarios pueden padecer trastornos psicológicos y psiquiátricos ligados a otros consumos. Las autoridades sanitarias y académicas deberían tomar en consideración este problema individual y social, que también es un problema de salud, y poner en marcha programas de prevención, detección y tratamiento.
