Abstract

Coinciding with the latest general elections held in Spain in 2011, Geological Society of the Spain, by means of its Geoheritage Commission, produced a document including some proposals on geoconservation according to the current legal framework, with the aim of providing a specific professional point of view to the political debate and actions. The document, which was distributed among the main political parties, is structured in four main blocks: 1.Some “organic” recommendations, which main purpose should be to help balance the efforts of different Administrations dealing on geo and biodiversity. 2.Proposals on the development of legal instruments towards geoconservation and a sustainable use of geodiversity and geological environment. 3.Some measures to ensure the preservation of geological sites of special interest, on the basis of a profound knowledge of geological heritage. This would involve the creation of legal protection features to supplement the already existing, and internationally accepted, features on protected natural areas, and the development of educational programs on geoheritage for the members of the groups responsible for Nature protection. 4.The development of research and educational programs towards improving the education and knowledge on geological heritage as well as its sustainable use, social dissemination and tourism.
