Abstract

The co-operative sector is in a quandary with a vast number of farmers supplying the co-operatives’ competitors at the origin of the supply chain (Spear, 2000), while many of the current farmers-members of the co-operatives do not show enough level of commitment to allow co-operatives to react in good conditions to the new market challenges (Nilsson, 2001). A basic postulate of this research is that the inter-firm governance mechanisms that the cooperative maintains with its members-suppliers have an influence on the cooperatives its market performance. We rely on Resourced-based View to posit the hypotheses of the model proposed in this research. 249 questionnaires were obtained from managers of Spanish agricultural marketing co-operatives. A structural equations model was developed to test the hypotheses. The results show that several inter-firm governance mechanisms do have a positive influence in co-operatives performance. It allows us to draw some managerial recommendations to the management of agricultural co-operatives.
