Abstract

The main aim of this research is to test the model of selective optimization with compensation (Model SOC) over driving of motor vehicles, in usual drivers with different groups of age, as well as, determine the perceived self-efficacy's influence over start-up of the Model. The population which has been object of the study is composed of people from 18 to 85 years old, residing in Spain and driving nowadays. There were a total of 220 subjects, who were classified into three groups according to age, namely: from 18 to 35 years-old, from 40 to 60 years old and 60-85 years old. Respondents filled in a battery of surveys so as to evaluate Model SOC for driving, perceived-self efficacy, as well as a variety of interest's variables over beliefs and driving habits. Likewise, the evaluation over physical skills and perceptive-motor was performed, following criterions of Royal Decree 818/2009 in order to dispatch and renewal of driving license. The outcomes suggested that there were not differences regarding the age, as well as, according to physical skills' state and the levels about self-efficacy among the surveyed in order to selection of driving, being very usual for all people to drive of their own choice, motivationally. In the same way, those people who possessed the most favourable beliefs in self-efficacy were observed to have tended to optimize to a greater extent than the rest of subjects, without the physical skills influencing under no circumstances. Regarding compensation to driving, significant differences were found in start-up of strategies in function of the age, perceived self-efficacy and, to a lesser extent, physical skills. Elder adults (from 65 to 85 years old) compensate more than rest of participants, nevertheless, the compensation already said cannot be explained in its entirety owe to presence of deficits targets, as well as, due to negative beliefs in self-efficacy.
