Resumen

The main aim of this thesis was to know the effect on pupils´ motivation of an intervention program applied during teaching dance at school, which includes the use of teaching skills orientated to the support of the basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness). Moreover, another purpose it was to assess the relationships between those motivational processes and the promotion of prosocial behaviors in pupils. A quasi-experimental design was carried out with 14 dance education teachers who participated in the program Learn with Dance, developed with ConArte (Arts and School International Consortium) from 2006, and 40 natural groups of pupils aged between 11 and 17 (M = 13.17), of 4 schools in Ciudad de Mexico. The groups were randomly assigned into either an experimental (24 groups, 447 pupils) or a control (16 groups, 474 pupils) group. A prior training programme was carried out with the teacher in the experimental group to support these needs. An initial and final measurement was taken in both groups (test/post-test) and the results revealed that participants from the experimental group showed an increase of the perception of autonomy, relatedness and the level of self-determination towards dance teaching sessions at school. By way of conclusion, the teachers should pay special attention for the strategies presented in this study, in order to get better levels of motivation towards dance at school.
