Abstract

The gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) is a common syndrome in large and giant breed dogs whose etiology is multifactorial. It is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of gas and liquid into the stomach, gastric distension and rotation, resulting in a state of shock and multiple organ dysfunction in the patient, which can be fatal. Medical and surgical therapies and intensive monitoring after surgery are necessary for the resolution of this pathology. The aim of this paper is to present an updated review of the etiology and management of this disease.
