Abstract

Background: Breast milk is the ideal food for infants. It is recommended exclusively for the first 6 months of life and up to 2 years or more along with complementary foods. The concept of prolonged breastfeeding refers to breastfeeding beyond 12 months, reaching even up to 24 months or more. Despite the recommendations, few women comply with them, making this a highly relevant public health issue that requires new evidence and promotion. The objective was to determine the possible benefits of prolonged breastfeeding that influence the health of the children who receive it. Methods: The databases Medline/Pubmed, Dialnet, Cochrane, Cuiden Plus, LILACS, and Scielo were consulted. Filters were applied based on recency (last 5 years) and language (English or Spanish). After a critical review of the results, 14 articles that met the review objectives were selected. Results and Conclusions: Prolonged breastfeeding is associated with better adaptation to the child's energy needs, greater immunological transfer, the creation of a good dietary pattern, and protection against overweight and obesity.
