Abstract

Parasite infections are a rare cause of respiratory disorders in our community. Due to globalisation, parasitic lung infections such as cysticercosis, malaria, paragonimiasis and schistosomiasis are becoming increasingly common outside their endemic areas. Other parasites typically present in our community, such as Echinococcus granulosus, Strongyloides stercoralis and Toxoplasma gondii, might also be involved in these pulmonary conditions. Parasitic lung infections are classified into 3 categories according to the causative agent: protozoa, helminths and arthropods. In clinical practice, however, the most prevalent parasitic lung diseases are those caused by helminths. The host's immune status, age, sex and epidemiological history are important aspects to consider when suspecting this diagnosis.
