Abstract

Objective: To explore the symptoms of anxiety and depression that parents of premature babies who are hospitalised in a neonatal intensive care unit can present, as well as their connection with the socio-demographic characteristics of parents and premature babies' clinics. Methods: Descriptive study with 18 subjects. Anxiety and depression symptoms were attested by using Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: The mean score in BAI, related to mild-to-moderate anxiety, was 17.75 (SD= 17.13). As regards the BDI, the mean score was 9.94 (SD= 11.17), which means absence of depressive symptomatology. Conclusions: Premature baby's admission to a neonatal intensive care unit seems to generate more anxiety than depressive symptoms. These symptoms are more intense in the case of young parents with financial difficulties and lower level of education. However, the clinical aspects of the premature baby do not have any relation with anxiety and/or depression symptoms.
